Proposal
Our objective for the Arun Yacht Club is to design a stylish, nautical, contemporary and inviting theme, using a wide range of products within the provided budget of £5000. We have chosen the nautical theme because we believe the Yacht Club should resemble everything to do with the sea, boats and sailing.
Along with the club, come the longstanding members. It is important to reflect their passion and pride in the scheme, therefore the pictures, flags and trophies will be left on proud display.
In order to attract younger members, we feel that some of the existing traditional features nedd adjustments to provide a fresh contemporary look.
The overall aim is to create a tranquil atmosphere with simple use of colour, to embrace the beauty of the River Arun without distraction.
The board shows the visuals of our design and samples of the materials used.
Walls and Ceiling
The walls and ceiling throughout the club will be painted in Brilliant White to brighten up the whole space. This will be accompanied with Light French Grey which accents the wooden features on the ceiling, the panelled dado, all doors and architraves, and the wooden window seats. At the moment, the wooden features absorb a lot of the light and appear to bring down the ceiling. In order to paint these areas, they need to be sanded and primed. We chose the pale grey because it breaks up the expanse of white but still has a soft, calming quality, which gives a sleek contemporary look.
It is important that the wooden surfaces are sanded and primed by a professional decorator before applying the grey.
Dining Area
The area of existing wood floor is going to be maintained as the dining area. On their own, the tables look dated, so in order to update the look in an easy, affordable and very effective way, we have included traditional, pinstripe tablecloths. These are 100% cotton and washable.
Bar Seating Area
Currently, the bar seating includes pub style chais and tables. We decided to apply a more comfortable, informal feel to this section. Within this area there will be navy blue sofas and pouffes, with removable and washable covers. A splash of colour is injected with the cushions covered in red striped fabric, sourced from Ian Mankin.
Beside the bar we have chosen to replace the existing bar furniture with white bar stools and bar tables, which are suitable for use by the dinghy sailors who may be wearing wet clothing. This ensures maximum use of space with great potential, at the moment the area is wasted.
The club expressed the need for a chid friendly area. We suggest that the bookcase houses a few books/toys suitable for child entertainment, and we are providing comfortable pouffes and a coffee table in front of the window seat. This informal area will be inviting for children who do not wish to sit up at the dining table and means there will be less disturbance to the diners in the main room.
Windows
There are a lot of large windows allowing the stunning view to be admired from all angles. However, at the moment the window treatments are extremely heavy and dark, absorbing a lot of the light. We have selected white, made to measure, roller blinds with a smart, crisp, organic fabric trim, from Ian Mankin, attached to the bottom, using strong fabric adhesive, to add colour and detail. If the blinds are raised, the trim will still be visible to make the bare windows look more attractive. The striped fabric on the cushions comes from the same organic range, providing correlation with the similar colours.
Re-organisation
The pictures around the room are important features of the Yacht Club although they could be rearranged into tighter groups, so they are not so spread out. For example, the paintings should be hung together, the photographic pictures should be together and the photographs of club members should be together.
We also feel the notice boards could be improved by pinning rope vertically to segregate sections and attaching information sheets within the columns.
Optional extras
If there was the option to spend a little extra on the interior, we have source a few alternatives which could be considered.
Most importantly, we feel that the club would be updated most significantly if the artexed walls were smoothed over. TO achieve effective coverage of these walls, it would be advised that a professional is called to carry out the job. The approximate cost would be £12 per square metre. W.J.Whites builders in Littlehampton could carry out the job, but would probably request a site visit prior to giving a firm quote.
As mentioned before, the budget includes hire costs for a floor sanding machine. Alternatively, it may be preferred that a professional carries out the job of sanding and finishing the floor. GJP Floor Sanding Ltd. Is a family run business based in Brighton who would complete the job fro approximately £3190. Another option would be to combine laying the new floor throughout.
In order to create a recurring theme for the furniture throughout the whole interior, the current dining chairs could be replaced with white dining chairs to match the bar stools, from the same ‘Ingolf’ range. For example, if the club required 80 chairs, these would cost an extra £2505.60 purchased from IKEA. To provide extra comfort for the diners, 80 ‘Ingolf’ striped chair pads could also be purchased for £391.20.
The total cost of this project is £4945.22. Please fin a summary of the individual costs on the following pages.
